Dr. Mercedes Juliá has been invited to give the Closing Address at the Summer Course organized by the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía,, "Juan Ramón Jiménez y América: Viajes y exilios."  The title of Dr. Juliá's talk will be: "Juan Ramón y su destino errante." July 24-26, 2017.

Congratulations Dr. Mercedes Juliá!

Dr. Mercedes Juliá was second reader in the Ph. D. Dissertation of Estefanía Tocado Orviz, former Graduate Student in the Hispanic Studies Graduate Program at Villanova University.  Dr. Juliá participated in Estefanía Tocado´s Doctoral Thesis Defense titled “Metaficción historiográfica: Memoria e identidad en la narrativa textual y fílmica española y británica posmoderna.” The defense took place on April 28th at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.  We would like to extend our Heartfelt Congratulations to Dr. Estefanía Tocado for her achievements. She will be Assistant Professor next academic year at Bucknell University.

Dr. Mercedes Juliá has been invited to participate in the Course “Juan Ramón Jiménez y América; viajes y exilios” organized by the International University of Andalucía and the Juan Ramón Jiménez Endowment. The event will take place during July 24-26 in La Rábida, Huelva. Dr. Juliá will lecture on “El destino errante de Juan Ramón Jiménez” (Juan Ramón Jiménez and his Uncertain Destiny).

Learn more about the Starfish Foundation on 4/26!

Co-Founder of the Starfish Foundation, Beth Awalt, comes to Villanova on Wednesday, April 26th @ 5:30pm in SAC 300 to discuss the history of education in Ecuador and the past, present, and future works of the Starfish Foundation. This foundation provides scholarship, tutoring and leadership development to youth living in extreme poverty in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Many children lack the financial resources to have adequate shelters let alone education. Come learn about volunteer, internship, and post-grad opportunities. We hope to see you there!

presentation of the poetry anthology La Tinusa: poetas latinoamericanos in the USA, selection and preliminary study by Arturo Dávila. The book discussants are Dr. Aurora Camacho de Schmidt (Professor Emeritus of Spanish and Latin American Studies at Swarthmore College), Dr. Róger Santiváñez (Temple University) and Dr. Carlos Trujillo (Villanova University), both poets anthologized in this book.

THIS THURSDAY: The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures invites you to the presentation of the poetry anthology La Tinusa: poetas latinoamericanos in the USA, selection and preliminary study by Arturo Dávila. Join us in two weeks for "Transmisión TrasAndina: Trans-Andean Indigenous Video and the Search for 'Sumak Kawsay'" by Dr. Amalia Córdova (Smithsonian Institution) on Tuesday, February 28th in SAC 300 from 3:00-4:30pm!

This talk will discuss recent Andean video-making productions and the emergence of various expressions of traditional knowledge, such as “Sumak Kawsay” (or “good living”) through new media. We hope to see you there!
